Alfred Bellard, was a Soldier of the 5th New Jersey Infantry

During the war he kept a detailed illustrated diary of his experiences. In 1975 it was edited by David H. Donald and published as “Gone For A Soldier: The Civil War Memoirs of Private Alfred Bellard”. It is most notable for being a first person, primary account of the Civil War life and combat experiences of a common front line soldier, and for its unflinching portrayal of the War.
