Unattributed, probably a member of Mathew Brady’s staff. "When the Southern Host withdrew, pitting Gray against the Blue, there were none more brave than you, Illinois."
Illinois soldiers made up about ten percent of the Union Army and their losses were about 13 percent on average. The Grand Army of the Republic veterans association was founded in Decatur, Illinois in 1866.
