The Gettysburg Address Was Not an Instant Hit-
Although the Gettysburg Address is now considered by some as one of the greatest speeches every written, not everyone thought so at the time. Even Lincoln himself, as he stepped down from the podium said "That speech won’t scour. It is a flat failure." Some newspapers printed comments like "We pass over the silly remarks of the president…" and “The cheek of every American must tingle with shame”.
One of the lines in that famous speech is “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”. In that, Lincoln was wrong because in fact most Americans know more about the speech itself than they do about the importance of the battle it commemorates.
