Prince Robert Philippe Louis Eugène Ferdinand of Orléans, Duke of Chartres 1840-1910 He fought for the Union in the American Civil War, and then for France in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. In 1861, Chartres fought at his brother’s side in the American Civil War. As an officer on the staff of the Union commander-in-chief, the young prince also fought the South at Gaines’ Mill.
